  • Calculate the quantity of polymeric sand needed:

    • Coverage will vary slightly and is largely determined by the size and thickness of the gaps between pavers. When installing polymeric sand into any joint 1” or greater, the depth of the sand needs to be equal to the width. Example, if your joint is 1” wide, install the polymeric sand 1” deep.

    • A 50lb bag of PolySand will cover 75-100sq ft of small joints. For larger joints ¼” to ⅜” it will cover about 30-60 sq ft. For flagstone installation with large or irregular gaps may need a 50lb bag for every 8-10 sq ft. There are also polymeric sand calculators available online that can be utilized.

  • WARNING: ConSANDtrate is water activated. Do not spread the mixture over wet pavers or if it is going to rain soon. Use personal protection equipment when handling. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. If contact does occur, rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Installing polymeric sand into paver joints is a crucial step in maintaining a stable and visually appealing hardscape. Polymeric sand helps to lock pavers in place, prevent weed growth, and inhibit insect infestations. Here’s a detailed guide to help you through the process:

    Materials and Tools Needed

    • Polymeric Sand

    • Broom (preferably a push broom with stiff bristles)

    • Leaf blower or vacuum

    • Garden hose (with spray nozzle)

    • Watering can (optional for more controlled watering)

    • Rubber mallet

    • Plate Compactor

    • Level or straightedge

    • Trowel (optional, for detail work)

    • Hand broom (for small areas)

    • Protective gear (gloves, safety glasses)

    1.  Preparation

    • Clean the Pavers:

      • Ensure that the paver surface is clean and dry. Remove any dirt, debris, or old joint material. A leaf blower can help clear dust and debris effectively.

    • Check Joint Depth:

      • Measure the depth of the joints between your pavers. Polymeric sand is typically installed to a depth of about 1 to 1.5 inches. If the joints are too shallow, you may need to adjust your paver setup.

    2. Dry Installation

    • Spread Polymeric Sand:

      • Pour the polymeric sand onto the paver surface. Use a push broom to spread it evenly over the joints. Make sure the sand fills the joints completely. Avoid overfilling, as excess sand can be difficult to remove.

    • Work the Sand into Joints:

      • Use the broom to sweep the sand into the joints. For smaller joints or intricate patterns, a hand broom or trowel may be helpful. Ensure the sand is packed tightly into all the joints.

    • Remove Excess Sand:

      • Once the joints are filled, sweep off any excess sand from the paver surface. Be careful not to leave any sand on the pavers, as it can stain or be difficult to clean after wetting.

    3. Compaction

    • Compact the Sand:

      • Use a plate compactor or a hand tamper to compact the sand into the joints. This process ensures that the sand settles properly and fills the joints completely. Be careful to avoid damaging the pavers during this step.

    • Recheck Sand Levels:

      • After compaction, check the sand levels. Add more sand if necessary to ensure that all joints are filled to the top. Repeat the compaction process if you add more sand.

    4. Watering

    • Moisten the Sand:

      • Using a garden hose with a fine mist setting or a watering can, lightly spray the surface with water. The water activates the polymer in the sand, causing it to bind together. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the amount of water to use. Avoid over-saturating, which can cause erosion of the sand.

    • Allow to Cure:

      • Let the sand dry and cure fully. This takes 48 hours. During this time, avoid walking on the pavers or exposing them to rain.

    • Clean Up:

      • Once the sand has cured, clean the paver surface if needed. Any remaining residue can typically be swept or washed away. Ensure that the joints are completely hardened and the paver surface is free of sand.

    5. Apply Protective Sealant (optional)

    • Applying a sealer to the patio will help protect your pavers and joints from weathering, stains, and will enhance the overall lifespan of your project.

    • Allow the polymeric sand paver joints 30 days to fully evaporate and cure.

    • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application. Ensure the sealer is applied evenly to the entire surface of the pavers and joints.

    Final Inspection

    • Check Joint Integrity:

      • Inspect the paver joints to ensure they are uniformly filled and the sand is firmly set. Any gaps or inconsistencies should be addressed by adding more sand and repeating the compaction and watering process.

    • Maintenance:

      • Regularly inspect and clean your pavers to maintain the appearance and integrity of the polymeric sand. Periodic reapplication may be necessary depending on environmental conditions and wear.

    Tips and Warnings

    • Weather Conditions: Avoid installing polymeric sand during rainy weather or when rain is expected. Extreme temperatures can also affect the curing process.

    • Paver Surface: Ensure that the pavers are completely dry before starting the installation process. Moisture can affect the polymeric sand’s ability to bind effectively.

    • Manufacturer's Instructions: Always follow the specific instructions provided by the polymeric sand manufacturer, as formulations and application guidelines can vary.

By following these steps, you'll achieve a durable and attractive result, enhancing the longevity and aesthetics of your paved surface.
